Faial island is also known for the land of whales and dolphins. In the last six years, 17 species of cetacean have been seen in the archipelago’s sea. Exclusively the Sperm Whales, the largest and most numerous in these waters. The other whales frequently sighted are Northern Bottle-nose Whales, Pilot Whales, Orcas and Sower-by's Beaked Whales.
The dolphins are also sighted regularly in these waters, the most common species seen are the Atlantic Bottle-nose, Risso, Atlantic Spotted and Striped.
