This city has the best public libraries and archives in Portugal as well some important private art collections. Faial, has seen its last volcano on 1957/58 which added 2.4 km² to the island, the ruined lighthouse and the roof of houses buried in the ashes, are an attraction. This island is also famous for its Marina and paintings, a former port for ships on transatlantic routes between Europe and the Americas.
