Most important events and festivals on Pico Island
Pico Island is not only known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage but also for its vibrant calendar of events and festivities. These celebrations reflect the island’s deep-rooted traditions, religious devotion, and close-knit community spirit. Whether you’re visiting during a religious festival or a cultural event, Pico’s festivities offer a unique insight into the island’s way of life and the Azorean culture.
Holy Ghost Festivals (Festas do Espírito Santo)
The Holy Ghost Festivals on Pico Island are a deeply rooted tradition, carried over from the island’s first settlers. These festivals, known as “Festas do Espírito Santo,” are celebrated in every parish on the island from Whitsun (Pentecost) onward. The festivals originated as a way for the community to seek divine intervention, particularly to stop the flow of lava from devastating their homes and crops.
Each festival features a procession led by “emperors” carrying a crown and scepter, symbolizing the Holy Spirit. The processions are accompanied by various delicacies, such as rosquilhas (a type of ring-shaped pastry), bolos de vespera (eve cakes), and pão doce (sweet bread), which are distributed among attendees at the end of the festivities. The simple, yet charming “empires” (small chapels or shrines) are adorned with a white dove, representing the Holy Ghost, and are an interesting example of Pico’s folk architecture. These festivals retain the charm of former times and are a colorful celebration of faith and community.
Festival of Bom Jesus – São Mateus
Celebrated annually on August 6th, this festival honors “Bom Jesus” or the “Good Lord” with a series of religious ceremonies and processions. The highlight of the festival is the Ecce Homo, a moving religious procession where the image of Bom Jesus is carried through the streets of São Mateus.
The parish is beautifully decorated for the occasion, and local traditional bands provide music that adds to the festive atmosphere. The festival is a time of communal prayer, reflection, and celebration, drawing participants from all over the island and beyond.
Semana dos Baleeiros (Whalers’ Week) – Lajes do Pico
The event dates to 1883 when an image of Our Lady of Lourdes arrived in the town of Lajes do Pico. Over time, the local whalers began to participate in the festival, which has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Pico’s whaling heritage.
Held during the last week of August, the festival features a grand religious procession, evening festivities, music, dancing, and cultural events that honor the island’s history and the lives of its whalers. Semana dos Baleeiros is a blend of religious devotion and communal celebration, making it one of the must-attend events on the island.
Festival of Saint Mary Magdalene – Madalena
Celebrated on July 22nd, this festival includes a procession dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene, along with other liturgical ceremonies.
The event also features lively festivities, including music, dancing, and illuminations that light up the town. It’s a time when the community comes together to honor their patron saint, and visitors are welcome to join in the celebrations.
Grape Harvest Festival
This Festival is a highlight for wine enthusiasts visiting Pico Island. Held during the second week of September, this festival celebrates the island’s rich winemaking tradition. The event includes grape harvesting, wine tasting, and various cultural activities that showcase Pico’s UNESCO-listed vineyards.
