The trail leads to Pico da Vara, the island’s highest peak, standing at 1,105 meters above sea level. The descent follows the same path as the ascent, offering breathtaking views along the way. On the return journey to the hotel, enjoy a short stop at Gorreana Tea Plantation, the only tea plantation in Europe, where you can experience the island’s rich tea-growing tradition.
Day 3 - Full-day Hiking Lagoa do Fogo - Duration: 7 hours
The hike begins along a dirt trail, gradually leading to the slopes of Fire Lake, where the landscape transforms with diverse vegetation. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of Vila Franca Islet and the charming village of Vila Franca do Campo. Pause for a relaxing lunch on the lagoon’s bank before continuing along a scenic trail covered with endemic vegetation. As the hike nears its end, the path opens into a serene pasture area. Before returning to Ponta Delgada, take some time to unwind with a refreshing swim at Praia da Caloura, a beautiful coastal spot perfect for a relaxing dip in the Atlantic.
Day 4 - Full-day Van Tour Furnas - Duration: 8 hours
This day is designed for relaxation, with just a bit of walking during the tour to Furnas. The Furnas Valley is one of the largest thermal hydropolises in the world, known for its iron- and sulfur-rich waters that bubble up from the ground. You’ll have the opportunity to taste and touch these unique waters—just remember to follow the guide's recommendations and avoid touching the boiling water or mud. As you explore, you’ll encounter golden trails left behind by rusty streams, a gothic chapel by the lake, and the soothing sounds of fumaroles and geysers. A visit to the stunning Botanical Garden is also part of the experience. The highlight of the day is the famous Cozido das Furnas, a traditional dish cooked underground using the heat of the volcano. This meal features a delicious mix of vegetables and meats, offering a true taste of the island’s volcanic heritage.
Day 5 - Half-day Hiking Sete Cidades and Serra Devassa - Duration: 3 hours
One of the most iconic locations on the island is the Twin Lakes of Sete Cidades, offering breathtaking views of the crater. This hike takes you through the central part of the island, showcasing some of the island's rare endemic flora. As you continue, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of various lakes and wetlands in the western part of the island. The lakes visited during this hike include Lagoa das Éguas, Lagoa Rasa, and, finally, Lago das Empadadas, which is reached after passing through a beautiful forest of Cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica). After enjoying these spectacular sights, you will return to the hotel.
Day 6 - Full-day Hiking Sanguinho - Duration: 7 hours
This hike begins and ends in Faial da Terra, located in the Povoação Municipality. The name "Sanguinho" is thought to be derived from an endemic plant, Frangula azorica. The trail takes you through one of the island's most stunning waterfalls, Salto do Prego, where you can enjoy a stop for a relaxing swim and a lunchbox meal. The return trail will lead you back towards Faial da Terra, offering more scenic views along the way. On the journey back to Ponta Delgada, there will be a short stop in Povoação Village, the island's first settlement, where you can explore the historic town.
Day 7 - Full-day Hiking Ribeira Funda and Praia da Viola - Duration: 7 hours
Praia da Viola is a small, tranquil beach with rough black sand, nestled between cliffs and several natural water sources. The walking tour begins in an open area before leading you into dense vegetation, passing by old water mills that once turned corn into flour, which was later used to bake bread. Along the way, several streams enhance the beauty of the trail. The hike culminates at the Tio Domingos viewpoint, where you'll be treated to a stunning view of Praia da Viola.
