Weather on Terceira Island: Mild with microclimates and regional differences

Terceira experiences a mild maritime climate shaped by the surrounding Atlantic Ocean. This temperate climate ensures moderate temperatures year-round, but the island’s weather is famously unpredictable, like the other Azorean islands. Visitors can experience a mix of sunshine, rain, and wind, often within the same day. The island’s unique topography also creates local variations in weather, adding to the dynamic nature of the climate.

Terceira’s climate overview

  • Climate Type: Subtropical Oceanic (mild, maritime influence)
  • Average Annual Temperature: Between 17°C and 21°C (63°F to 70°F)
  • Rainfall: Annually around 1,000 to 1,400 mm (39 to 55 inches)
  • Sea Temperature: Ranges from 16°C (61°F) in winter to 24°C (75°F) in summer
  • Humidity: High throughout the year, typically 75% to 85%
  • Wind Patterns: Frequent Atlantic gusts, especially during winter months

Terceira’s climate remains moderate thanks to the Atlantic, which prevents temperatures from reaching extremes. The island is lush and green due to regular rainfall, but the variability in weather can mean rapid shifts from sunny skies to passing rain showers.

Regional weather differences

The island’s geography creates microclimates that vary from one region to another:

Western Terceira

The western areas, including the hills around Santa Bárbara, receive more rainfall and are covered with lush vegetation. The westerly winds bring frequent rain to this part of the island, contributing to its greenery.

Eastern Terceira

The eastern region is drier, with fewer trees and more open landscapes. The plains of Achada, for example, have a more arid feel compared to the dense forests of the west.

Coastal Areas

The island’s coastal areas generally experience milder and warmer conditions, with the towns of Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória benefiting from more stable temperatures.

Terceira Island weather by month/season

Terceira’s weather changes with the seasons, but these shifts are less extreme than in continental climates. Here’s what to expect throughout the year:

Spring (March, April and May)

Spring brings gradual warming, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 20°C (57°F to 68°F). Rain is common, especially in March and April, but tends to taper off by May. This season is ideal for experiencing the island’s blooming landscapes and for visiting natural attractions like Lagoa das Patas.

Best activities:

  • Hiking through trails in Serra do Cume for panoramic views
  • Exploring local gardens and flower-filled areas
  • Birdwatching in forested areas

Summer (June, July, August and September)

Summer is the warmest season, with temperatures between 21°C and 25°C (70°F to 77°F). This period is also the driest, with July and August being the sunniest months. It’s a popular time for outdoor activities, as the island’s many festivals—such as Sanjoaninas—coincide with the best weather. Coastal water temperatures also rise, making it perfect for swimming in natural pools.

Best activities:

  • Whale watching along the coast
  • Attending cultural festivals like the Holy Ghost Festivals
  • Swimming and snorkeling in Biscoitos’ natural pools

Autumn (October and November)

Autumn sees temperatures cooling slightly, ranging from 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). Rainfall increases, especially in November, but warm days are still frequent in October. It’s also grape harvest season, offering an excellent opportunity to visit local vineyards.

Best activities:

  • Wine tasting at local vineyards
  • Visiting cultural landmarks like the Impérios

Winter (December, January and February)

Winter in Terceira is mild, with temperatures between 14°C and 18°C (57°F to 64°F). Rain is more frequent, especially from December through February, but snow is extremely rare. While outdoor activities may be limited due to rain, winter is perfect for exploring museums and cozy indoor spaces.

Best activities:

  • Discovering Angra do Heroísmo’s historic center
  • Visiting local markets for authentic island products
  • Exploring volcanic attractions like Algar do Carvão

Influence of The Azores High in Terceira weather

The Azores High, a semi-permanent high-pressure system, affects Terceira’s weather, contributing to frequent rain and strong winds, particularly in the winter. Rainfall can reach up to 1,400 mm annually, with the highest amounts typically occurring from October to March. The wind often brings fast-moving clouds, causing quick shifts between sun and rain. Along the coast, the wind can make temperatures feel cooler than they are, so dressing in layers is advisable.

Microclimates and local variations

The island’s varied elevation creates distinct microclimates:

  • Hills Near Santa Bárbara: These higher regions are cooler and experience more frequent rainfall, leading to dense vegetation and lush landscapes.
  • Serra do Cume: Known for its sweeping views of the Manta de Retalhos (“patchwork quilt”), this area offers one of the island’s most famous viewpoints and can be cooler due to its elevation.
  • Coastal Areas: Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória typically have milder weather and receive more sunshine than higher elevations.

Ocean influence and sea temperatures

The Atlantic Ocean’s influence keeps sea temperatures relatively warm, ranging from 16°C (61°F) in winter to 24°C (75°F) in summer. The milder coastal waters make swimming possible even outside the peak summer months, though wetsuits may be recommended for winter.

Best time to visit terceira

The best time to visit Terceira is from June to September, when temperatures are warmest and rainfall is less frequent, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and cultural events. Spring (March to May) is also a favorable time to experience the island’s natural beauty, with fewer crowds.
