Most important festivities on São Jorge Island
São Jorge Island is known for bringing its communities together in celebration of history, faith, and Azorean culture. From religious ceremonies to cultural weeks filled with performances and activities, the island offers an exciting array of festivities throughout the year.
Holy Ghost Festivals
One of the most anticipated events on São Jorge Island, and in all the Azores islands, is the Holy Ghost Festivals. These festivals, dating back to the time of the island’s early settlers, unite the inhabitants in a strong spirit of fraternity and faith. The celebrations begin with the crowning of the “emperor” and the ceremonial display of the crown, which remains in the managers’ home for eight days. The festival culminates in a grand “empire” feast, where locals and visitors enjoy traditional foods and live music. The afternoon features lively performances from local bands, adding to the festive spirit.
Bullfighting on a rope is another unique tradition, brought from neighboring Terceira Island, that adds excitement to the Holy Ghost Festivals. These events, held across the island from spring through summer, invite brave participants to face a bull restrained by a rope, creating a thrilling spectacle that draws large crowds.
