Weather in São Jorge Island, Azores

 

São Jorge, like the rest of the Azores islands, experiences a temperate maritime climate. Influenced by the Gulf Stream, São Jorge’s weather remains relatively mild year-round, with frequent rainfall and moderate seasonal changes. The island’s climate is ideal for those who enjoy lush, green landscapes and a mix of sunny and misty days. Temperatures rarely reach extremes, making São Jorge a comfortable destination regardless of the season. 

 

Seasonal weather overview 

Spring (March – May) 

In spring, São Jorge starts to warm up after winter, with average temperatures ranging from 14°C to 18°C (57°F to 64°F). Rain is still common, but there are increasingly sunny days, particularly in May. Spring is a great time to explore the island’s famous hiking trails and enjoy the blooming landscapes. 

  • Average rainfall: About 70-80 mm per month 
  • Activities: Hiking in the Fajãs, bird watching, and exploring coastal viewpoints.

 

Summer (June – August) 

Summer is the warmest and driest season in São Jorge, with average temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The warm weather is ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and diving. Rainfall is lower in summer than other seasons, though brief showers can still occur. Ocean temperatures are also at their warmest, making this a popular time for water sports. 

  • Average rainfall: About 40-50 mm per month 
  • Activities: Swimming, scuba diving in the Fajã dos Cubres, exploring the Caldeira de Santo Cristo lagoon. 

 

Autumn (September – November) 

Autumn sees a gradual cooling, with temperatures averaging 17°C to 22°C (63°F to 72°F). Rain becomes more frequent in November, marking the transition to the wetter winter season. Autumn remains an excellent time to visit São Jorge, with the island’s landscapes still lush from summer warmth and rainfall. 

  • Average rainfall: Around 80-90 mm per month, increasing in November 
  • Activities: Continued hiking, local festivals, and exploring São Jorge’s historical sites. 

 

Winter (December – February) 

Winter in São Jorge is mild but wetter, with temperatures between 14°C and 17°C (57°F to 63°F). The island experiences more frequent rain, especially in January and February. Although it’s the coolest season, winter in São Jorge is relatively warm compared to mainland Europe. This is a quieter period on the island, ideal for a peaceful getaway. 

  • Average rainfall: 100-120 mm per month 
  • Activities: Exploring museums, tasting local cuisine, and visiting cheese factories. 

 

Best time to visit São Jorge 

The best time to visit São Jorge is from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these months, temperatures are warmer, and rainfall is lower, making it perfect for exploring the island’s unique outdoor activities, such as the Fajãs and coastal cliffs. Summer is especially ideal for those interested in swimming, diving, and other water activities. 

 

Tips for travelers 

  • Pack for Rain: Regardless of the season, it’s wise to bring a waterproof jacket and layers due to São Jorge’s frequent rain and changing weather. 
  • Hiking Gear: São Jorge is known for its rugged trails, so comfortable hiking boots are essential. 
  • Waterproof Footwear: Due to the island’s damp environment, sturdy and waterproof shoes are recommended, especially for exploring the Fajãs and coastal areas. 
  • Sunscreen: Even on cloudy days, UV exposure can be high, so sunscreen is essential.
